What We Do
The AA Service Structure AA's general service structure is discussed below. See the pamphlet Circles of Love and Service for an AA service overview.
![]() A District is a geographic partition that gives A.A. groups a voice in matters affecting them or A.A. as a whole. Each District has a District Committee composed of representatives from local A.A. groups called General Service Representatives (GSRs). Each group may elect a GSR. The GSR is the link between a group and A.A. outside the group. The GSR attends district and area meetings and area assemblies to represent their group’s conscience. The District Committee elects at least one representative, a District Committee Member (DCM) to serve as an essential link between the district and its Area. As a member of the Area committee, a DCM represents a District's conscience to the Area Delegate who, in turn, represents an Area's conscience at an annual General Service Conference attended by area delegates from the U.S.A. and Canada. Massachusetts is divided into two A.A. areas: Eastern Massachusetts (Area 30) and Western Massachusetts (Area 31). In North America, there are a total of 93 service Areas. Each area also has Central Offices or Intergroups that support local A.A. groups. The Boston Central Service Office is located in Boston and the Western MA Intergroup Office is located in Holyoke. There is also a Worcester Area Intergroup, a Berkshire Intergroup, a Cape Cod Intergroup, a Martha's Vineyard Intergroup and a Nantucket Intergroup. The A.A. Service Manual describes Alcoholics Anonymous general service concepts in much greater detail. An Area 30 Service Handbook is for Area 30's service volunteers. |
